Went to see 'Now You See Us' at @tate today. The exhibition aims to bring to the surface a history of art by women, much of which has gone forgotten. Some really beautiful works, and many highlight the success of women painters against the odds. I do feel like the show could've gone deeper, and placed way too much focus on the role of the RA. Plus, all of the artists were white women... anyway here's a few of my favorites

Kimathi Mafafo, Unforseen Journey of Self Discovery, 2020, hand and machine embroidered fabric
At Soulscapes @dulwichgallery

As a keen embroiderer myself I was instantly drawn to this work. The layering, the detail, the use of space is just incredible! It really made me feel things and reminded me of the joy that art brings 💞💞

A woman emerges from a veil into the welcoming embrace of nature. She is leaving behind her cocoon, ready to rediscover the world. Framed as a part of Soulscapes, an exhibition that explores our connection with our landscape through artists of the African diaspora, the work depicts freedom from conformity, particularly that of patriarchy and racism.

It also brings to mind the lgbtq+ community, and the support and enjoyment of life that one finds there after coming out. It also resonates when I think about my own struggles with mental health and how the world can be beautiful once depression and anxiety are overcome.

Mahwish Chishty @mahachishty , By the Moonlight, 2013, paper, gouache and photo transfer on plywood

Mahwish Chishty paints the body of a drone with a design inspired by Pakistani folk art. The work relates to the drone strikes committed by Afghanistan to Pakistan at their border. These strikes have been ongoing since 2004.

In merging traditional folk art with contemporary politics, we gain insight of the destruction caused by the strikes on Pakistani society. The camoflaging of the drone explores the complexities of power on the border.

With the backdrop of war and destruction, this work causes us to question the impact it has on culture and landscape, as well as the role which beauty has to play in understanding this.

Fell in love with the works of Guari Gill (@_gauri_gill_ ) and Rajesh Vangad (@rajesh.vangad.79)on a recent visit to @thephotographersgallery.

The works merge photography and Warli painting- an art practice of the indigenous Warli group of India. Lost landscapes are overlaid with hundreds of figures enacting the history of Vangad's community. They breathe life into the images of the stark landscape, in which Vangad himself is the central figure. His stories of life seek to decolonise, forcing us to face the realities of Warli life within the present moment. Their dynamic landscape is constantly evolving and we witness it through these images.

Caroline Coon documents her experiences during her time as a sex worker in this work. The scene shows sex workers waiting for clients, taking down time to relax. The closeness of the workers is evident here and their interactions humanizes them in the face of societal discrimination. There is definitely a sense of friendship here.

Merging painting and poetry, Worship of the Moon is heavily inspired by the transformative effect of the moon landing on the psyche of the world. This major historic event inspired Taiwanese artists to focus their practice on the relation of the self with the universe. In this case Lee collaborated with his wife Gu Yue, creating works that responded to her poetry series 'Rite of the Moon'. It reflects on the moon's connection with the earth through its movement through the sky.

Marina Abramović, Role Exchange, 1975

In one of Marina Ambramović's lesser known works, she swapped roles with a sex worker in Amsterdam for three hours. Whilst she sat in a window in the red light district, the sex worker attended an opening on behalf of the artist at Gallery De Appel. For the duration of the performance, Abramović had two visitors. One was looking for the original sex worker and declined service and the other was not accepting of her price.

Throughout the process of the artwork the artist's perception of sex work changed from one of shock and misunderstanding to one of empathy. She came to view it as a legitimate career and understood the detachment from body that the sex workers experience during their work.

Role Exchange brought into question the formation of the art gallery as a space by bringing in the everyday and starkly pointing out the facts of life. Furthermore, it highlighted the role of the body as commodity and object of trade in both spaces. It is an important work in highlighting the potential art has in disrupting both perspectives of the body and the homogenous nature of the art gallery.

Rubens and Women at @dulwichgallery rethinks the works of a highly influential artist through a lens that I'm totally here for! I feel like exhibitions representing the Renaissance often overlook the significance of women during this period despite their regular presence in artworks, particularly in religious imagery. Though this was a show representing a male artist, it successfully highlights the significant role of the opposite gender in shaping his work.

And of course the artworks shown were all stunning... something about the eyes! Highlight for me was definitely 'The Birth of the Milky Way', we love to see breastfeeding being celebrated, and in none other than a 17th century piece. For me this really enabeled me to rethink how women were perceived by Rubens and that it wasn't as dismal as we might assume.

Rubens and Women at @dulwichgallery rethinks the works of a highly influential artist through a lens that I'm totally here for! I feel like exhibitions representing the Renaissance often overlook the significance of women during this period despite their regular presence in artworks, particularly in religious imagery. Though this was a show representing a male artist, it successfully highlights the significant role of the opposite gender in shaping his work.

And of course the artworks shown were all stunning... something about the eyes! Highlight for me was definitely 'The Birth of the Milky Way', we love to see breastfeeding being celebrated, and in none other than a 17th century piece. For me this really enabeled me to rethink how women were perceived by Rubens and that it wasn't as dismal as we might assume.
