Don’t get me wrong, there are some great vegan jokes out there, I do have the capacity to laugh I swear, but some really fucking cross the line. The bad ones give you a sense of a weird carnivore vs. herbivore comedy club. I’m not talking of the classic veggie joke; e.g. why did the tofu cross the road?- To prove it isn’t a chicken. Yeah pretty standard, might achieve a few little giggles from your audience. I’m talking the insulting kind, ones about how outspoken vegans are about their life choices: How do you find a vegan at a dinner party? -Don’t worry, they’ll let you know.
Let me tell you about why I have a problem with this. As a vegetarian trying to transition to that vegan life, I pride myself in my life choices. Changing my diet was a major life-changing decision I made: my lifestyle was revolutionized and my conscience clearer. The meat industry is disgusting to me and is a cause I feel very strongly against, so I’m going to talk about it. So meat eaters pick at us for being so outspoken about these choices, but I think it comes naturally to us, it is our passion, and we are taking that passion into our lifestyle. Sometimes it’s something I feel people need to know about, sometimes it’s a good topic of conversation, and sometimes I might just want to talk about food.
Jokes about meat eaters however, aren’t mainstream. I personally choose not to dig at people for discussing their life choices; there are better and funnier things. Vegan jokes are funnier when everyone is laughing together, not when people are whipping up an insulting joke that’s been used multiple times.
